Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813): Born in Italy, Lagrange lived mostly in France and made mathematical contributions in many areas. Among other things, he took a critical look at the mathematical works of Newton, Euler, and Leibniz, who had created the foundations for the amazing branch of mathematics we know as calculus. Lagrange refined the works of these great mathematicians. In doing so, he created the calculus notation f'(x) and f''(x), which we still use today. He also made contributions in the field of astronomy and to the development of the theory of finite groups. |

The Central LimitTheorem (page 488) is extremely important. Make sure you understand the premise and the conclusion. Here is asimple example illustrating what it says.
Suppose you have a population withmean 132 and standard deviation 7. Consider the collection M ofmeans of all possible samples of size 20. The Central Limit Theoremsays that M has the following properties.
- It is approximately normal.
- It has a mean = 132 (the same as the population mean).
- It has a standard deviation = 7/sqrt(20) = 1.565.
